The move is retroactive to July 11.

The team recalled infielder Adam Duvall and right hander George Kontos from Triple-A Fresno in corresponding roster moves. Yusmeiro Petit will take Cain’s place in the rotation and start Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies, the team said.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Friday in Miami that Cain's elbow "has been cranky" lately. Cain is 2-7 with 4.18 ERA this season and has lost five of his last six starts.

The Giants are tied for the National League West lead with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
