Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen could be out 3-4 weeks with an oblique injury.
Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen could be out 3-4 weeks with an oblique injury, according to a report Monday from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writer Ron Cook.
Cook said Starling Marte, who is currently on a minor league assignment with the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians, is expected to join the big league club some time this week.
McCutchen, who is the reigning National League MVP, left Sunday night's game with discomfort in his left side after taking an awkward swing in the eighth inning. The swing resulted in a sacrifice fly that tied the game. He was hit in the back by a pitch during Saturday night's game against the Diamondbacks.
The Pirates will lose McCutchen during the home stretch of a tight National League wild-card race. At the end of Monday night's games, the Pirates sat half a game behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild card spot. Pittsburgh is attempting to make the playoffs in two consecutive years for the first time since the 1991-92 seasons.
