Cubs DFA Nate Schierholtz, activate Kyuji Fujikawa

The Cubs have designated outfielder Nate Schierholtz for assignment and activated reliever Kyuji Fujikawa from the 60-day disabled list, the team announced Wednesday.

Schierholtz, 30, posted a .192 batting average with three home runs and 33 RBI over 99 games this season.

Fujikawa, 34, recorded a 5.25 ERA and two saves over 12 innings in the major leagues last season before undergoing Tommy John surgery. The right-hander appeared in 12 minor league games in 2014.

The Cubs opened Wednesday at 48-63, in last place in the National League Central.
