Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha will begin his rehab assignment on Sunday, paving the way perhaps for a return to the mound in September, according to a tweet Wednesday from CBS Sports radio host Brian Stull.

The 23-year-old will join the Double-A Springfield Cardinals this weekend after having thrown a simulated game in Springfield on Wednesday afternoon. He has been on the disabled list with a stress reaction in his right shoulder since the end of June.

Rockies put Wilin Rosario, Boone Logan on 15-day DL

Wacha, the MVP of the 2013 NLCS, has a 2.79 ERA and 1.11 WHIP this season.

The Cardinals were second in the NL Central heading into their game Wednesday night in Pittsburgh, which ended up being a 3-1 loss to the Pirates.
