The San Diego Padres have traded outfielder Seth Smith to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for pitcher Brandon Maurer, the team announced Tuesday.

Smith, 32, batted .266 with 12 home runs and 48 RBIs last season. He had a .367 on-base percentage and a .440 slugging percentage. Smith was the subject of trade rumors this summer, but signed a two-year contract extension in July.

In Seattle, Smith could form a corner outfield tandem with Nelson Cruz, who signed with the Mariners earlier this month. Smith can play either left field or right field.

Maurer split time between the majors and Triple-A Tacoma in each of the past two seasons. He appeared in 38 games for the Mariners in 2014 and made seven starts. He had a 4.65 ERA in 69.2 innings.

CORCORAN: Padres continue overhaul with Upton, Norris deals

The Padres have made a variety of moves in recent weeks that left them with a surplus of outfielders. San Diego has acquired three starting-quality outfielders this month: Justin Upton, Wil Myers and Matt Kemp. The Padres also acquired catchers Derek Norris, Ryan Haniganand Tim Federowicz, and pitchers Jose Castillo and RHP Gerardo Reyes.
