The New York Yankeesacquired infielder Gregorio Petit in a trade with the Houston Astros on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations.

Petit, 30, hit .278 with two home runs and nine RBI in 37 games for the Astros last season. At Houston's spring training, he was hitting .310 (9-for-29) in 18 Grapefruit League contests.

[daily_cut.mlb]Petit also appeared in 25 games for the Oakland Athletics in 2008 and 2009. Over his 62 career MLB games, Petit is a .278 hitter with two home runs and 10 RBI in 156 plate appearances.

After signing with the Oakland Athletics in 2001 as an amateur free agent, the Venezuelan has had stints with five Major League teams.

The Yankees also announced on Wednesday that shortstop Brendan Ryan has a Grade 2 right calf strain and is expected to begin the season on the disabled list.
