Diamondbacks' Archie Bradley hit in face by Carlos Gonzalez line drive
Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Archie Bradleywas hit in the face Tuesday night by a line drive off the bat of Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, but after several minutes walked off the field under his own power.
Bradley, who never lost consciousness after the injury, was transported to St. Joseph Hospital for further testing, the team announced.
He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.
The right side of Bradley's face was visibly swollen and the pitcher appeared groggy as he sat on the mound. The speed of the ball off Gonzalez' bat was measured at 115 miles per hour, according to The Denver Post.
Late Tuesday night, Bradley tweeted a picture of his swollen face, commenting that his injuries "could have been a lot worse."
He echoed that positivity in comments made to MLB.com.
"It's not pretty to look in the mirror right now, I'll tell you that," said Bradley, who tweeted a selfie of his face. "You know it's part of the game. Obviously you hate to see it. It hurt pretty bad. It doesn't bother me to watch the replay. I've seen it 15, 20 times now. After watching it, it could have easily got me in the eye or directly in the face. I've got to think the Lord above is watching over me."
The hit occurred on a 2-0 pitch with one out in the second inning and a runner on second base, and Arizona leading 3-0. The rookie was replaced by Andrew Chafin.
In three games for the Diamondbacks this season, the 22 year old is 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA.
