Former MLB All-Star Jose Canseco wrote the definitive story on steroids with his book, Juiced. But when he shared his personal story with Sports Illustrated in this week's issue, he revealed that he wishes he hadn't written the book at all.

SI's Jack Dickey profiled the enigmatic slugger for the magazine's recent “Where Are They Now?” issue and found that the book that was supposed to change the game for the better changed Canseco's life for the worse.

In Juiced, which was published in 2005 just before steroid fervor reached a fever pitch in baseball and on Capitol Hill, Canseco brazenly named names—including his own—of players who he said had used steroids, including Mark McGwire and Jason Giambi

While McGwire and Giambi have either landed or contended for coaching jobs, the closest Canseco can get back to the game is one-off guest appearances at minor league ballparks across America.

"Being completely severed from Major League Baseball, probably for life—meaning affiliate ball, I can't coach, I can't teach, I can't be hitting coach or manager or anything–in that way, it cost me a lot, Canseco told SI.

"But I told the truth, and the game is better for it now."
