San Francisco Giants second baseman Joe Panik has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his lower back, the team announced Monday

Panik was given the day off on Sunday but the extra rest did not help the injury and he was forced to go on the DL.

Panik has played in 97 of San Francisco’s 104 games this season and is batting .309 with a .374 on-base percentage and 25 doubles. The second-year player was named to his first career All-Star team in July.

The Giants called up utility infielder Kelby Tomlinson from Triple A to take Panik’s spot on the roster. He hit .321 in 97 games at Double A and Triple A this season, with a .376 on-base percentage and 21 stolen bases.

Light-hitting backup infielder Ehire Adrianza will start at second base for the Giants in Monday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves
