Cal Ripken Jr. honored by Orioles 20 years after breaking Gehrig's streak

Twenty years after he broke Lou Gehrig's streak of 2,131 consecutive games played, the Orioles honored Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. on Tuesday.

Twenty years after he broke Lou Gehrig's streak of 2,131 consecutive games played, the Orioles honored Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. on Tuesday.

RipkenJr., 55, played his 2,131st straight game on Sept. 6, 1995 (Baltimore will be on the road for the actual anniversary). He threw out the first pitch to former Orioles teammate Brady Anderson after a pregame video played in his honor. The iron man threw a strike.

Ripken was an Oriole his entire career from 1981 to 2001, winning two MVPs and playing in 2,632 consecutive games between shortstop and third base.

“I really hadn’t taken the time to prepare for this, so I was wondering if that was the right preparation,” Ripken said, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Fittingly, Orioles third baseman and rising star Manny Machado hit his 100th career double during the game, passing Ripken himself as the youngest Oriole ever to do so.
