New York Yankees starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka sustained a Grade 1 hamstring strain while running the bases Friday and will miss his next scheduled start, manager Joe Girardi told reporters Sunday.

Ivan Nova, who was removed from the rotation after going 6–8 with a 5.11 ERA in 14 starts, will pitch in place of Tanaka on Wednesday. The Yankees are hoping Tanaka misses just one start.

The righthander told reporters he wanted to pitch, but the team decided to take a cautious approach.

Tanaka was doing some light throwing with his translator in the outfield Sunday evening before the Yankees take on the Mets at 8:05 p.m.

The Yankees entered Sunday trailing the Toronto Blue Jays by three games in the AL East race.
