White Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale set a franchise record on Friday with his 270th strikeout of the season.

Sale fanned Tigers catcher James McCann in the top of the second inning on a 3-2 slider for his third punchout of the game.

The previous record of 269 Ks in a season was held by Hall of Famer Ed Walsh in 1908. He accomplished the feat in 464 innings, while Sale’s 270th strikeout came in the midst of his 203rd inning of 2015.

He entered Friday leading the the major leagues with 11.9 strikeouts per nine innings.
