Stephen Strasburg signs seven-year, $175 million extension

Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg has signed a seven-year, $175 million contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.
“Ensuring that Stephen will remain a part of our organization for years to come is a proud moment for our entire family,” Nationals owner Ted Lerner said in a statement. “We are very fond of Stephen and his entire family, and we’ve thought very highly of them since he became such an integral part of our organization almost seven years ago. We’re honored that he feels the same way about the Washington Nationals, and very happy to keep him pitching in the nation’s capital.”
Chelsea Janes of TheWashington Postfirst reported that Strasburg had signed an extension.
The deal includes an opt-out after the third or fourth year, Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports.
Strasburg, who turns 28 in July, would have become a free agent after this season. Strasburg’s agent is Scott Boras, whose clients typically do not sign extensions before reaching free agency.
The Nationals made the hard-throwing pitcher the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft. He made his much-anticipated debut in 2010, but was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery later that season. He returned to the majors in September 2011.
Strasburg has a 2.76 ERA and a 5–0 record this season.
