The Red Sox announced they have called up infielder Yoan Moncada, who is considered one of the top prospects in baseball.
The Red Sox will call up infielder and top prospect Yoan Moncada on Friday, the team announced Wednesday.
He will join the team in Oakland for the weekend series against the A’s. Moncada will likely see time at third base, where Pablo Sandoval has been out with injury all season and Travis Shaw has scuffled to a .217 batting average. The Red Sox are 74–59 and in second place in the AL East.
The 21-year-old native of Cuba began the year at High A Salem, and has hit .285 with 11 home runs in 44 games at Double A Portland. He was ranked No. 1 by Baseball America on its Midseason Top 100 Prospects list.
Moncada signed with the Red Sox organization for a reported $31.5 million bonus in March 2015 after receiving permission from the Cuban government to play pro baseball stateside.
