Giants starter Madison Bumgarner and Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig got into a heated verbal altercation at the end of the seventh inning in Los Angeles on Monday, causing benches to clear.

Puig was running out a slow roller up the first base line, and was thrown out by Bumgarner to end the inning. After the out was recorded, Bumgarner shouted “F— yeah!” causing Puig to look back. When he looked, Bumgarner began to shout at him, appearing to tell him to stop looking at him.

This caused Puig to inch closer, retorting, and the bullpens to clear.

Bumgarner was lifted from the game in the top of the eighth for a pinch-hitter. The Giants led, 1–0, at the time, but later lost when the bullpen gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Adrian Gonzalez’s walk-off double off Hunter Strickland was the deciding blow.

The loss was a missed opportunity for the Giants, who could have pulled into a tie with the Mets for the first NL wild-card spot with a win.
