Moments after the Marlins and Mets remembered Jose Fernandez before their game on Monday night in an emotional tribute, infielder Dee Gordon led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer to right, his first of the season.

Gordon, wearing Fernandez’s No. 16 jersey on his back, just as his entire team did on Monday, popped one into the seats and immediately became teary as he rounded the bases. He was met with a warm embrace in the Marlins dugout.

Gordon, a lefthanded hitter, dug into the box from the right side wearing Fernandez’s helmet and took a pitch to pay tribute to his former teammate. He then switched to the other batter’s box to homer.

Fernandez was killed in a boating accident on Sunday morning along with his two friends. He was 24.
