Report: Joe Maddon to Interview for Angels Manager Job This Week

Joe Maddon to interview for Angels' managerial job this week

Former Cubs manager Joe Maddon is set to interview for the Angels' managerial job this week, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported on Sunday. ESPN's Buster Olney first reported on Friday that Maddon would be speaking with the Angels.

According to Rosenthal, the Angels are Maddon's preferred landing spot ahead of the 2020 season.

Maddon has been linked to Los Angeles since he and the Cubs parted ways on Sept. 29 after five seasons and a World Series win in 2016. He previously spent 30 years with the Angels as a catcher, scout, coach and manager in the Angels minor league system before working on the big league coaching staff from 1994-2005.

Maddon finished his five years in Chicago with a record of 471-339 after the Cardinals routed the Cubs, 9-0, last Sunday to clinch the NL Central.

The Angels fired manager Brad Ausmus on Sept. 30 after just one season, clearing the way for Maddon's potential return. Ausmus, 50, had just completed his first season on a three-year contract with the team.

The Angels finished with a 72–90 record in 2019, fourth in the AL West.
