Rockies Manager Bud Black Ejected After Arguing About HBP

Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto thought he was hit by a pitch on Friday night vs. the Rockies, so he told umpire Alex Tosi. That was apparently enough for Tosi, as he awarded Realmuto first base, even though he didn’t initially call it a hit-by-pitch.

Rockies manager Bud Black disagreed with Tosi, but Colorado could not challenge as they had already lost their challenge earlier in the game. Therefore, all he could do was argue with Tosi about the home plate umpire’s decision to just believe that Realmuto was correct. So, Black got his money’s worth and was tossed from the game.

At the time of the incident, Colorado was up 3–0, but the Realmuto hit by pitch loaded the bases with Phillies. Philadelphia would go on to score two runs in the inning and cut the Rockies’ lead to just one. The Phillies would go on to score two more runs and win the game 4-3.

Had the umpires reviewed the play, it is possible that the Rockies wouldn’t have allowed either run to score and kept a bigger lead. Unfortunately for Black, Realmuto got the luckier end of this situation.
