Cubs Beat Yankees Friday for Franchise’s First-Ever Win in Bronx
The Cubs 3–0 win over the Yankees on Friday night marked the team’s third win in five games as Chicago tries to claw back into the NL Central Division race. However, in the process, the Cubs did something that they had somehow never done before.
By winning the game in New York, the Cubs secured their first ever win in any version of Yankee Stadium, doing so in their 13th ever road game vs. the Yankees.
Since Interleague play didn’t start until 1997, Chicago hasn’t had many chances to play New York. The two teams have played just twice in the World Series, both in the 1930s and both resulting in Yankees sweeps for four Cubs losses in the Bronx.
In the regular season, the Cubs and Yankees have played three series previously in Yankee Stadium, eight games total starting in 2005, all of which were New York sweeps. Chicago’s record at home vs. the Yankees isn’t much better, as they are just 4–7 at Wrigley Field when they’ve hosted New York, and they have not won a series vs. the Yankees since 2003.
In total, the Cubs are now 5–23 all-time vs. the Yankees with just one series victory, but have a chance for their second series win with a victory in either of the next two games in New York.
