Tigers’ Eduardo Rodriguez Blocks Deal to Dodgers Using No-Trade Clause, per Report

The Tigers and Dodgers agreed to a trade involving pitcher Eduardo Rodríguez, but the left-handed pitcher invoked his no-trade clause to kill the deal, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports.

Rodríguez, who signed a five-year deal with the Tigers before the 2022 season, has a limited 10-team no-trade clause in his contract. Los Angeles is reportedly one of those ten teams, and he apparently opted to remain in Detroit instead of going to a contender.

Last year, in his first season with the Tigers, Rodríguez was away from the team for three months as he dealt with family-related issues. The starter also has the ability to opt out of his contract in the upcoming offseason instead of playing out the final three years of his Tigers contract.

After pitching to a 4.05 ERA in his first season with Detroit last year, Rodríguez has had a bounce-back season in 2023, accumulating a 2.95 ERA in 15 starts this season. The veteran’s success, combined with his opt-out, is why Detroit was looking to trade him now, as the Tigers are 12 games under .500 ahead of the trade deadline.
