Marlins’ Sandy Alcantara Announces He Will Miss 2024 After Tommy John Surgery

Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcántara announced on Friday that he underwent Tommy John Surgery after the year ended and will miss the entire 2024 season.

“I am most saddened for the great Marlins fans, who were so supportive of me and the team this year,” Alcántara said in his statement. “The drive for the playoffs was thrilling for us all.”

Alcántara won the NL Cy Young award in 2022, pitching to a 2.28 ERA in a league-high 228.2 innings for the Marlins last season. This year, however, Alcántara struggled a bit more with a 4.14 ERA in 184.2 innings pitched, his worst ERA since his rookie season in 2017.

Throughout his career, Alcántara has established himself as an innings eater, throwing more innings than any other pitcher since 2021.

On Sept. 3, Alcántara was put on the injured list with what the Marlins would diagnose as a sprained UCL. While trying to return this season, Alcántara had to leave a Triple A rehab start with forearm tightness, which essentially ended his season.

While Alcántara will miss next season, the veteran said he will continue to support the Marlins as he tries to rehab as effectively as possible.

“I give this game my all, I give this city my all,” Alcántara said. “And so I promise I will not take a day off as I push to be back and better than ever.”
