Phillies Sign Whit Merrifield to One-Year Contract, per Report

The Philadelphia Phillies are signing utilityman Whit Merrifield on a one-year, $8 million guaranteed deal with a club option for 2025, as first reported Friday by Foul Territory.

Merrifield spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Kansas City Royals, playing all over the diamond at every fielding position besides catcher and shortstop. Merrifield is known for his durability, as he played in every game for the Royals from 2019 to ’21, a total of 384 contests played.

Kansas City sent Merrifield to the Toronto Blue Jays at the 2022 MLB trade deadline, and he remained in Toronto through last season. In 2023, Merrifield made his third career All-Star Game and produced 11 home runs, 26 stolen bases and .700 OPS in 145 games for the Blue Jays.

Whit Merrifield is reportedly signing a one-year contract with the Phillies.

The Phillies add Merrifield as depth to a team that has made back-to-back NLCS appearances. Philadelphia will likely use the utilityman all over the field, filling in the gaps in its star-studded roster.
