Entering Thursday, the Houston Astros are officially in first place of the AL West division after sweeping their division rival Texas Rangers. Their offense set a franchise record over the three-game stretch and are reminding the league why their lineup is so feared.

While their superstars are getting the headlines, another player on the roster is proving that he could be the x-factor to a deep playoff run this season.

Jose Abreu hit a grand slam and drove in seven RBI in the series finale against the Rangers on Wednesday. It was one of his best games in an Astros jersey since signing a three-year, $58.5 million deal with the defending champions during free agency.

Houston's new addition did not get off to a good start, recording his worst ever hitting metrics and ending up on the injured list.

The slugger's poor performance and injury forced manager Dusty Baker into moving other players to first base as they searched for a reliable everyday option at the position.

Abreu's strong showing during the series finale reminded everyone of the type of hitter he used to be and still could become for the Astros this season.

"I’ve had some rough moments, but the biggest thing for me is this whole organization has had my back, a lot of the guys here have had my back -- even [during] the tough moments and the good ones. You’ve got to try to find the positive things and take those," the slugger told Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.

Over his last seven games, the first baseman is hitting .231/.310/.615 with three home runs and 13 RBI.

His batting average is still down from the .292 average he recorded during his first nine seasons in the league. However, his power numbers are starting to tick up, which makes this already loaded lineup even more potent.

Abreu is a solid defensive first baseman has been a great hitter throughout his career. If he's able to find his bat down the final stretch of the season, he will be a major impact player in Houston's quest to repeat as World Series champions.
