How the 'Spring Breakout' Works

There are a few rules for Spring Breakout that are different from a typical spring training game, so here's what to look out for:

Length: Spring Breakout games will only be seven innings as compared to nine, unless the teams mutually agree to play nine. (Several teams already have, but Atlanta and Boston have reportedly not yet reached a decision.) There are no extra innings, so the game can end in a tie.

Three-batter minimum: There is no three-batter minimum in effect for pitchers.

Player re-entry: Pitchers who are removed from the game can re-enter later. This rule does not apply to position players unless re-entering the game due to an injury to a teammate. If a team has a two-way player, that player can pitch, leave the game, and then re-enter as a position player.

Pitching-specific rules: The games will use pitch timers. PitchCom communication devices for the battery are available if desired. There is a limit of seven mound visits per team.
