The Atlanta Braves get positive injury updates about Sean Murphy & Max Fried

Murphy looks like he'll avoid an injured list stint, and Fried is back to throwing bullpens

We talked about this last week, but it's amazing how dominant the Atlanta Braves have been this season despite the injuries up the middle and with the pitching staff.

The injury concerns haven't gone away in the month of June, as Atlanta's still missing three key pitchers from their arsenal, as well as a new injury to catcher Sean Murphy.

Murphy left last Saturday's game against the Rockies after a single, with what the team termed "hamstring discomfort." In anticipation of potentially losing Murphy, the team made a Sunday morning transaction to DFA Charlie Culberson and recall backup catcher Chadwick Tromp from Gwinnett. The move was met with much consternation across the fanbase when the news leaked that Culberson's father was set to throw out the first pitch on Father's Day.

The good news for Murphy is MRIs done on Sunday determined that it was simply "hamstring irritation" rather than a strain or tear, and he was able to complete some on-field work in Philadelphia on Tuesday prior to the matchup.

Murphy was reportedly running at 50-60 percent, but wouldn't commit to a definite time frame on his return to the lineup. "We’ll see," he told reporters before Tuesday's matchup. "No promises on any day. But the way we’re progressing, hopefully I feel good enough soon."

The Braves got good news about some injured pitchers, as well, with both Max Fried (forearm) and Dylan Lee (shoulder) having progressed to throwing normal bullpens. The positive movement from half boxes to bullpens doesn't change the timeline for Fried, who is still expected to come back sometime soon after the All-Star Break, owing to the need for rehab starts to stretch back out after an extended absence. Lee should be a quicker return, and he's sorely needed in the bullpen: with the injury to Jesse Chavez (shin), AJ Minter is the only left-handed pitcher available out of the "armbarn". Lee's pitched twenty and a third innings this season, with a 3.10 ERA, and he's one season removed from a 2022 season where he covered fifty and two-thirds innings with a 2.13 ERA and 10.5 K/9.
