Arizona Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo (2) leaves the game with an injury against the New York Yankees

D-backs Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo has Torn Meniscus, Will Have Surgery

The 2023 All Star is expected to be out at least one month

The battered Diamondbacks have received yet another injury blow. Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo has a torn meniscus in his injured knee that will require surgery. Perdomo has been placed on the injured list and is expected to miss at least a month.

Utility infielder Blaze Alexander will step in to get the bulk of the playing time at shortstop in Perdomo's absence. The team also selected the contract of infielder Kevin Newman who has been playing for the Reno Aces. Newman was a non roster invitee during spring training but did not win the backup job out of camp.

In order to clear space on th roster for Newman the team was forced to designate reliever Corbin Martin for assignment. Considered the best prospect acquired in the Zack Greinke trade at the time back in 2019, Martin has never been able to remain healthy. He was on the comeback trail in spring training and had pitched several games for the team in Reno this year, but his clock with the team has run out.

The D-backs injured list has been growing since late in spring training. They lost starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez and Closer Paul Sewald just before the season opened with a lat strain and oblique strain respectively. Centerfieler Alek Thomas went down with a hamstring strain four games into the season. Prized shortstop prospect Jordan Lawlar suffered a fractured thumb and is out two months. They just recently activated outfielder/DH Randall Grichuk from the IL, with him getting into his first game last night.

The D-backs depth is being tested heavily early in the season. With their record at 4-5 and reeling from another late inning meltdown in a 9-8 loss to the Braves last night, they'll need to find a way to regroup and not lose ground through a tough April schedule.
