2 DFA'd Diamondbacks Pitchers Find New Homes With Phillies and Giants

In this story:
Two members of the Arizona Diamondbacks' 2026 bullpen will be moving on to new organizations.
According to their respective transaction logs, two pitchers whom the Diamondbacks elected to designate for assignment in the past week have been claimed off waivers.
Right-hander Andrew Hoffmann, who was the return in the Randal Grichuk trade with the Kansas City Royals at the 2025 Deadline, was picked up by the Philadelphia Phillies. Left-hander Philip Abner, Arizona's sixth-round pick in the 2023 Draft, was picked up by the San Francisco Giants.
Andrew Hoffmann claimed by Phillies

The Diamondbacks never got to see much of Hoffmann in the majors. He only appeared in 16 major league games with Arizona.
Hoffmann's ERA for the 2026 season is an ugly 7.71, but seven of his 10 earned runs came in one 0.1-inning blowup to the Milwaukee Brewers on April 28. He held a 2.38 ERA over his other 11.1 frames this season.
But Hoffmann was optioned to Triple-A Reno following that April 28 game. He pitched in only 12 games for the Aces before going down with a Lat strain in mid-June that eventually landed him on the 60-day Injured List.
Hoffmann had become eligible for a return just over a week preceding his DFA. The move came as part of the transaction that allowed flamethrowing righty Justin Martinez to be activated from the IL, providing the needed 40-man roster spot for Martinez.
Hoffmann's mid-90s four-seam and plus changeup were promising weapons despite his poor ERA numbers. But he'll bring those offerings over to Phillies organization. He has been optioned to Philadelphia's Triple-A affiliate LeHigh Valley IronPigs, for the time being.
Philip Abner claimed by Giants

Abner had been called up to the majors on five separate occasions during the 2026 season alone. His status as a left-hander made him a frequent option in terms of bullpen depth — especially considering Arizona's overall lack of southpaws.
Abner never quite caught on at the major league level, pitching to a 6.28 ERA over the course of eight appearances (14.1 innings) for the Diamondbacks this season.
Similar to Hoffmann, Abner had extremely limited major league playing time. He appeared in 13 games (18 total innings) between 2025 and 2026.
In the minors, Abner pitched to a 5.01 ERA in 30 games this season. That ERA is a better-than-average figure given the extreme hitter's environment of the Pacific Coast League. He held a 3.35 ERA over 113 career minor league games since 2023.
He'll join the Sacramento River Cats, the Giants' Triple-A affiliate.
