SF Giants activate starter from IL, option Tristan Beck to Triple-A

In this story:
The SF Giants activated right-handed starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani from the injured list on Tuesday, optioning right-handed pitcher Tristan Beck (Giants Top 16 Prospect) to Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. DeSclafani will start Tuesday night's game against the Cincinnati Reds. DeSclafani was placed on the injured list earlier this month with right shoulder fatigue.
DeSclafani got off to an excellent start this season but has struggled with injuries and inconsistency over the past two months. On the season, the 33-year-old has a 4.44 ERA (4.12 FIP) in 17 starts with 72 strikeouts and 18 walks in 93.1 innings pitched. The Giants were also stringently limiting his workload in his last few outings before he landed on the injured list.
DeSclafani made a rehab start in the Arizona Complex League during the All-Star break, allowing one run on five hits (zero walks) across four innings pitched with four strikeouts. Given his limited runway to ramp up, DeSclafani will likely be limited to 60-80 pitches in his first start or two back from the injured list.
Beck has been one of the most effective Giants rookies this season. A former Stanford star, Beck has a 3.06 ERA (3.77 xERA, 4.16 FIP, 4.46 xFIP) across 50 innings pitched (20 appearances) with 38 strikeouts and 12 walks in the majors. He also has a 3.77 ERA across four starts at Triple-A. While Beck has been effective, the Giants are flush with veteran bulk-innings/long relievers who cannot be optioned to the minors.
The SF Giants starting rotation is as healthy as it has been this season. Logan Webb, Alex Cobb, Anthony DeSclafani, Ross Stripling, and Alex Wood are all active alongside long relievers Jakob Junis and Sean Manaea. With the MLB trade deadline right around the corner and the Giants seemingly in a position to acquire talent, players like DeSclafani have a short time to convince president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi that the team does not need to make any upgrades.
