Andrew Abbott shuts down SF Giants in Reds 5-1 victory

In this story:
The SF Giants dropped to 54-43 on Wednesday afternoon, losing to the Cincinnati Reds 5-1. Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb surrendered five earned runs on nine hits and four walks with zero strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched and was easily outdone by Reds rookie Andrew Abbott who allowed just one hit across eight shutout innings.
Cobb was unusually erratic on Tuesday. Cobb, who always seems drenched in sweat on the mound, may not be a great fit for the hot midwestern summer weather. It was 91 degrees in Cincinnati on Tuesday with 54% humidity. Cobb worked around baserunners across two shutout innings before the Reds got on the scoreboard with a two-run homer from catcher Luke Maile.

The Giants' lone rally against Abbott came with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. Already trailing 2-0, Wilmer Flores worked a walk, and rookie Luis Matos (Giants Top 4 Prospect) lined a double to left field. Giants third-base coach Mark Hallberg made an aggressive decision to send Flores despite Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz's incredible arm, and De La Cruz easily threw out Flores at the plate. De La Cruz's throw was clocked at nearly 100 mph.

Flores did get the Giants on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth inning, hitting a two-out solo home run off former Giants reliever Derek Law. It was Flores' fourth home run of the series, 12th of the season. However, it was far too little to mount a comeback. Law immediately bounced back and struck out Mike Yastrzemski to end the game.
With the loss, the SF Giants are now two games back of the Dodgers for the top spot in the National League West and tied with the Diamondbacks in second place. They will now travel further east to Washington D.C., to begin a three-game series against the Nationals tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM Pacific.
