SF Giants prospects: Infielder hits three home runs in a Double-A game

In a wild 17-10 game on Thursday, SF Giants infielder prospect Carter Aldrete led the way with an incredible three-home run game.

On Thursday, August 31, SF Giants minor-league infielder Carter Aldrete hit home runs in three straight trips to the plate for the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels. Six different Richmond players hit a home run in a wild 17-10 win over the Hartford Yard Goats, but Aldrete led the way with his three-homer performance.

Aldrete is a 2019 draft pick out of Arizona State, but has ties to Northern California having been born in Monterey and attending Monterey High School. Heading into the season, Aldrete was ranked the 36th best prospect in the Giants system, although he dropped in a midseason update.

In June, Aldrete told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that growing up in a competitive familial environment pushes him to become a better ballplayer. His uncle, Mike Aldrete, had a decade-long MLB career, and is currently the first-base coach for the Oakland Athletics.

“The former Arizona State standout knows that the pressure is always there, which means that there are expectations and work to be done in order to enjoy the big moments, such as hitting 15 home runs since he was promoted to Richmond in July 2022,” the Times-Dispatch wrote n June.

Aldrete is now up to 18 home runs following the three-homer night since being promoted to Richmond last year. This season, he is slashing .217/.279/.372 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI.

The Flying Squirrels are in the middle of a playoff race and are one game back of the Erie SeaWolves in the Southwest Division. However, because Erie won the first half, if they win the second half, as well, the second team that goes to the playoffs would be based on overall season record, which Richmond would qualify for with a 63-61 record if they stay in second place.
