On Tuesday afternoon, the SF Giants announced a multi-year sponsorship of two new Liga Maya teams in Mexico City. The Giants are slated to play a two-game series against the San Diego Padres in Mexico City at the end of April, and that presumably encouraged the franchise to make this partnership. The Giants are paying for all of the teams' league fees, travel costs, uniforms, and equipment.

Former Giants star Hunter Pence will be traveling to Mexico City prior to the series as a representative for the team.

“Youth are the future of baseball and there is no better way to invest in the future of the game than to invest in the youth here in Mexico,” said Pence in a Giants press release. “It is important to the Giants to give all kids the opportunity to play and learn the game regardless of socioeconomic background. This is why we are sponsoring these teams, providing kids from underserved communities with access to this great game.”

The two teams sponsored by the Giants will, of course, be named Gigantes (the Spanish translation of Giants), consisting of boys and girls ages 9 to 12 years from Iztapalapa and Gustavo A. Madero, two municipalities in Mexico City. Teams are comprised of 15 children in the 9-10 and 11-12 age brackets.

The Giants plan to host parents and children from the Liga Maya teams during their visit to Mexico City at the end of April. It should give kids an exciting opportunity to meet big-league players and coaches and maybe even get some pointers on how to improve their game.

The teams sponsored by the Giants will compete in the 2023 MLB Cup, a baseball tournament for kids throughout Mexico, akin to the Little League World Series. This year's tournament is the first to include both a boys' and girls' division.
