The Cleveland Guardians waited until the very last minute, but they did end up pulling off a trade right before the 6:00 deadline.

Cleveland sent Josh Bell to the Miami Marlins in exchange for Jean Segura and infield prospect Khalil Watson.

The Guardians signed Bell over the winter, hoping that he could provide much-needed power to their lineup. However, that has not been the case. The first baseman has hit .233 with a .701 OPS during the season while only contributing 11 home runs.

The advanced stats indicate that Josh has been having a better year than the traditional numbers say. But in the end, it just didn't work out.

Segura went to the World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2022 and signed with the Marlins in the offseason. He's another example of a free agent the club probably wishes they would've passed on.

Segura is batting .219 this season and only has an OBP of .277. He will be released by Cleveland prior to reporting.

The other part of this deal is Watson who is currently with Miami's High-A affiliate. He's hitting .210 this season with an OPS of .727.

Clearly, this trade was made to move on from Bell and open up more playing time for the younger players. This all makes even more sense considering the Guardians traded Aaron Civale for Kyle Manzardo, the 37th overall prospect per MLB Pipeline, who is also a first baseman.
