REPORT: Former East Carolina Pitcher Signs With Guardians

Cleveland has reportedly signed Carter Spivey, the 2022 American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, to a contract.

Over the past few years, the Cleveland Guardians have excelled in developing pitchers into Major League mainstays.

Some names on this list include 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber, 2023 AL Rookie of the Year runner-up Tanner Bibee, Triston McKenzie, Logan Allen, and Gavin Williams.

Cleveland has now reportedly added another young pitcher to its organization.

According to the East Carolina University Baseball team, the Guardians have signed right-handed pitcher Carter Spivey to a contract.

The terms of the contract have not yet been disclosed.

The 24-year-old pitched for five seasons at East Carolina, where he was teammates with Williams for three of them. Spivey made 83 appearances (15 starts) during his collegiate career, going 17-4 with a 4.71 ERA, one complete game, one shutout, six saves, 55 walks, 168 strikeouts, and a .271 opposing batting average.

Arguably his best season came in 2022, when he was named the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Pitcher of the Year and a Third Team Collegiate Baseball All-American. The right-hander made 35 appearances (two starts), going a perfect 8-0 with a 2.83 ERA, five saves, 19 walks, and 76 strikeouts.

Spivey was then named the 2023 AAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year by three different publications and unanimously by the conferences’ coaches, as well as a Preseason Second Team All-American by both Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

He was eventually named to the 2023 All-AAC Second Team after making 24 appearances (10 starts) and going 7-3 with a 4.68 ERA, one complete game, one shutout, one save, 22 walks, and 68 strikeouts.

After his final college season, Spivey made eight starts with the Florence Y’alls of the Frontier League last year. He went 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA, 41 strikeouts, and a 1.19 WHIP.
