What Will 2027 Look Like for Marlins First-Round Draft Pick Jacob Lombard?

Already listed as the Fish's fourth-best prospect, Miami won't rush the budding 18-year-old superstar towards the Majors any time soon

In this story:

For the Miami Marlins, their 2026 first-round draft selection, Jacob Lombard, could be the final piece in a future Fish dynasty. He's that good and they are that loaded with talent.

With one of the best young Major League rosters to go along with the youngster, the team has a boatload of promising prospects waiting to step forward. So, theoretically, the young shortstop should blossom in the big leagues just as all his contemporaries are reaching their prime. And from what we've witnessed in his limited professional career, Lombard has the chance to potentially be the best of the bunch. He's that talented.

Those scintillating skills have translated steadily since he signed with Miami and was assigned to the Single-A Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League. He's hitting .220, with three home runs, 12 RBI, and seven stolen bases in just 13 games into his career.

Lombard's brother, George, just made his Major League Baseball debut earlier on August 3, the same day Jacob made his pro debut with the Marlins. However, the younger brother shouldn't be joining the elder in the bigs right away. Obviously, he won't be on the big club to begin the 2027 campaign. Or at all, for that matter.

There's really no reason to look at Lombard as ready to make that leap until around 2029. Unless he just happens to explode early, there won't be a rush to expose him to high-level pitching or start the clock on his eventual arbitration.

That's not likely to happen, and despite already receiving a bit of a springboard already, he's still just 18-years-old and has time to develop right along with many of his future teammates. He could reach as high as the Double-A level by next season, but look for him to spend the majority of next year with the Single-A Beloit Sky Carp. That's been an important proving ground for many previous prospects in the past.

Lombard is already listed as number four on Miami's list of their top prospects at MLB Pipeline. The other prospects ahead of him are pitcher Thomas White, infielder Aiva Arquette and pitcher Robby Snelling. All have spent considerable time in the Marlins' system, which shows just how much time Lombard may need to be ready to make his MLB debut.

But the upside, as noted in his MLB Pipeline scouting report, is immense.

"He’s already added strength, and speed, of late, with potential plus power... he has plenty when he needs it," per MLB's scouts. "All of this adds up to him having the tools to become a multi-time All-Star if he can put it all together."
