In this story:

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Casey Mize was forced to leave the team's win over the Minnesota Twins early on Saturday night.

Mize left with what was announced as a right ankle sprain. The right-hander had thrown the slowest fastball of his career before leaving the game, with his sinker coming in at 88.4 mph.

Following the game, Padres manager Craig Stammen provided an update on the status of Mize.

"Yeah, day-to-day definitely. Like, I don't think it's awful; it's not a really bad sprain," Stammen said. "But it's swollen, and it'll take some time to heal up."

Before Mize exited the game, he had thrown 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, including three home runs. Mize revealed that he tripped on a step in the dugout, causing the ankle sprain.

“It seemed like my cleat caught one of the steps and then tried to catch myself, and I ended up rolling my ankle ... on the bottom step there,” Mize said. “So got it evaluated, taped it up, came back out. My warm-ups weren’t great, you know, so that’s why they came out and checked on me, and I asked to stay in the game and just give us what I could.”

Thankfully, it feels like the Padres may have dodged a bullet with this injury. But only time will tell whether Mize needs to miss any future starts.

The hope is that Mize won't have to miss much time. The veteran has been a strong addition to the Padres' starting rotation since the trade deadline, giving the team multiple quality outings.

But San Diego also won't rush him back, giving him the needed time to heal. Mize seemed to be in good spirits after the game, sharing how the injury felt.

“It’s a little tender,” Mize said. “I feel it for sure. We’re treating it and we’ll throw everything we can at it and get it right.”

Will Anyone Replace Casey Mize in Padres Rotation?

If Mize is forced to miss a couple starts, the Padres have options to turn to. San Diego could look to use right-hander Griffin Canning as a starting pitcher again.

Canning lost his spot in the rotation after posting a 6.50 ERA over 21 appearances (11 starts) for the year.

The team could also bring Joe Musgrove back, who was expected to make one or two more rehab starts before returning.

However, Mize is optimistic he won't be forced to miss more than one start if any, and Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports the team won't rush Musgrove back.
