Padres Roundup: SD Officially Releases Pitcher, Makes Surprise Roster Move, Wild Sweep Over Brewers

The San Diego Padres walked-off the Milwaukee Brewers in a thrilling 11-inning victory on Wednesday as they improved to 65-57 on the year and completed the series sweep of the winningest team in Major League Baseball.

Robbie Ray struck out four across four innings of work and allowed two earned runs off of as many hits surrendered. The bullpen then failed to allow an earned run for the remainder of the extra-innings contest, highlighted by Adrian Morejon striking out four (including three in the 11th inning) over the final two frames.

Offensively, Xander Bogaerts cut the deficit in half with a third inning solo home run. It wasn't until the eighth inning that Jake Cronenworth legged out an infield single to bring home the tying run.

Heading into the bottom of the 11th down by one run, Jackson Merrill hit a sacrifice fly to tie things back up. Then, it was Luis Campusano who hit the eventual walk-off single, while Sung-Mun Song beat the throw home to solidify Campusano's first career walk-off hit and give the Padres sole possesion of the second National League wild-card spot.

Ahead of Wednesday's excitement, the Friars made a somewhat surprising roster move as David Morgan was reinstated off the injured list and optioned to Triple-A.

Morgan posted a 2.66 ERA during his 2025 rookie season. However, after a 4.50 ERA through his first 18 outings of 2026, he has been on the shelf since late June. Now, he'll continue to work in the minor leagues.

In other news, the Padres officially released a right-handed pitcher who also played with the Houston Astros organization. The 26-year-old posted an ERA of 6.14 across 31 Triple-A appearances this season.

Finally, the excitement surrounding the sweep of a team that entered the series as the best in baseball will likely last for a little while longer. San Diego has been on a five-game winning streak, won seven of their last 10 and are exponentially better positioned for October than they were just one month prior.
