The Padres are 6-4 in their last 10 games and are coming off of a resounding 7-2 victory on Friday night to start the series in the Nation's Capital. This included a monster five-run ninth and a Manny Machado grand slam to secure an incredible start to the second half of the season.
Especially with the trade deadline looming, all signs point to the Padres buying before July 31 and fortifying their roster for the most important stretch of the season.
As things stand, San Diego is in second place in the stacked National League West division and if the season ended today, would be the holders of the final Wild Card spot.

The season is far from being over and the Friars are far from being satisfied, however. There are still a few areas to improve upon, especially since the bats have been relatively colder leading up to the All-Star Break, and outfield depth seems to be the consensus area to upgrade.
There are a few different candidates to strike a deal with, but a team insider recently linked a key reliever to be someone dangled to other franchises to get a justifiable return.
Regardless of what happens at the end of July, all that matters for this weekend is to try and take the series from the Nationals and continue chipping away at the Los Angeles Dodgers at the top of the division.
