In this story:

As the San Diego Padres' season moves forward, the offense is going to need more guys to step up. With the uncertainty around the starting rotation right now, the Padres' offense may need to carry this team if they want to make any noise in the National League.

San Diego has a lot of talent on the roster, including some real star power, but others are going to need to contribute. The Padres can't rely solely on guys such as Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Jackson Merrill all year long.

Part of what makes teams special is the role players who can play within the system to make the team well-rounded. San Diego has a few guys on the roster who will be looked upon to provide real impact this year, including slugger Gavin Sheets.

In fact, MLB writer Ethan Penrod of Just Baseball is predicting a special season for Sheets this year. Penrod believes that Sheets is capable of hitting 30 home runs for the Padres.

This is a bold prediction about the Padres' slugger, especially considering that Sheets has never hit 30 home runs in a year before. But the veteran has seen his power numbers increase over the last few years, which could bode well for his chances.

Last season for the Padres, Sheets played in 145 games, hitting .252 with 19 home runs and 71 runs batted in. This was easily the best statistical season of Sheets' career, and he will be looking to do even more damage at the plate this season.

Now, being in his second season with the Padres, Sheets may have more comfort with how the team likes to approach hitting. This could see his numbers take a jump, and he has already shown signs of more power from his performance during the spring.

In 18 games played this spring for the Padres, Sheets hit .279 with four home runs and nine runs batted in. Sheets has looked calmer at the plate, and that discipline has translated into him hitting the ball with more power.

If Sheets is able to increase his power even more, it would drastically help this Padres lineup take off. San Diego's offense has been prone to inconsistent stretches at times, so having another player to put fear into opposing pitchers could be huge.

The infielder is only 29 years old, so his improvement year-to-year is already proof that he could become a reliable power hitter in this league. Sheets may not get to the 30 home run mark this year, but as long as he shows more signs of progression, the team will be happy.

Thus far in 2026, Sheets is hitting .250 with zero home runs and an OPS of .636 across seven games. After starting the season 0-for-13, he's 5-for-his-last-7 with two runs batted in. Hopefully that's a sign of things to come for the left-handed slugger.
