The Philadelphia Phillies are hoping to retain starting pitcher Aaron Nola after the 2023 MLB season. Nola is in his walk year and is slated to become an MLB free agent after the season.

According to the New York Post, the Phillies are expected to make a strong push to re-sign Nola. The report also suggests that Nola does indeed prefer to stay in Philadelphia, so he may be more willing to give a "home town" discount.

The Phillies had discussions with Nola all offseason, something we talked about here at Inside the Phillies numerous times. But the offers weren't up to Nola's liking at the time.

The starter has begun the season with a 4.64 ERA through seven starts, but has recently settled down. In his last three starts combined, Nola has thrown 21.0 innings and allowed six earned runs, good for a 2.57 ERA.

He's coming around.

Nola is one of the premier starters in the league, he is a workhorse who puts in 200-plus innings a season and he is reliable to make his start every fifth day. The Phillies would be wise to secure his services in their rotation for the foreseeable future.
