Philadelphia Phillies at Giants Series Preview: Pitching, Matchups And More

In this story:
The Philadelphia Phillies are coming off of a fiery series with the Colorado Rockies in which they took a series victory. Now, they will travel to San Francisco to take on the Giants in a three-game set.
The Phillies will faceoff against old friend Gabe Kapler who now leads the San Francisco Giants.
Here are the pitching matchups and what to expect.
Monday, May 15 at 9:45 p.m. ET
Connor Brogdon (2-0, 2.61) vs. Alex Wood (0-0, 2.45)
Brogdon will be the opener for the Phillies on Monday with Bailey Falter scheduled to come in behind him. Veteran Alex Wood will get the nod for the Giants.
Brogdon has been effective this season and him opening may allow Falter to find success through the second and third times through the order.
Wood has been surprisingly productive this season in four appearances in which he has pitched 11.0 innings.
It also gives starter Zack Wheeler an extra day of rest.
This matchup is a true toss up.
Tuesday, May 16 at 9:45 p.m. ET
Zack Wheeler (3-2, 3.80) vs. Alex Cobb (3-1, 1.70)
Tuesday will be a battle of the aces as Wheeler takes the mound. He will be looking to continue to string together encouraging performances. Cobb will start for San Francisco and has been astonishingly effective this season.
In 47.2 innings pitched in 2023, Cobb has compiled a 1.70 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.
If both pitchers are on their game, this very well could be a pitcher's duel.
The Giants likely have the edge here if only a bit.
Wednesday, May 17 at 3:45 p.m. ET
Taijuan Walker (3-2, 5.75) vs TBD
The Phillies will send Walker out to the mound for getaway day. Walker has had two back-to-back stellar starts after simplifying his repertoire. Sometimes a slight adjustment is needed.
But since that adjustment, Walker has become exactly who the Phillies wanted him to be when they signed him to a four-year, $72 million contract this winter.
It is unclear who the Giants will send to the mound on Wednesday.
Prediction:
The Philadelphia Phillies take Monday and Wednesday's games to secure the series victory. Tuesday's game should be a close one, but the Giants do just enough behind Alex Cobb to come away with the victory.
