In this story:

The Philadelphia Phillies have plenty of reasons to be optimistic as they begin spring training Thursday in Clearwater, Fla.

They’re coming off a stellar season in which they made a surprising run to the World Series before falling just two wins short against the Houston Astros.

While the Phillies had a terrific offseason with additions like Trea Turner, Taijuan Walker, Matt Strahm, Craig Kimbrel and Josh Harrison, it’s not a given that they’ll reach the World Series again.

After all, nothing is guaranteed in sports.

As spring training is set to begin, here are three pressing questions for the Phillies.

1. Can the Phillies survive without Bryce Harper if he’s out until mid-July while recovering from Tommy John surgery?

The Phillies proved that they were able to more than stay afloat while Harper was sidelined last season. During a 52-game absence with a fractured left thumb, the Phillies went 32-20. Those wins were vital as they clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2011.

Knowing Harper, he’ll try to come back early. That’s his makeup.

The Phillies appear to have a more complete roster on paper for the 2023 season. They should be able to withstand an extended absence from Harper. The more wins they can compile in April, May and June will be beneficial so the pressure is off as the season comes to a close.

2 . Can Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler stay fresh the entire season?

When you reach the World Series, it means the offseason is shortened by a lot.

And we all know that Nola and Wheeler each appeared to be a bit tired at times during the postseason run.

With Walker now in the starting rotation and promising prospect Andrew Painter possibly in the mix, manager Rob Thomson may have to look for ways to get Nola and Wheeler more rest.

With the Phillies focused on a championship, health in the postseason means everything.

3. Can Nick Castellanos regain his form from the 2021 season?

After producing 34 home runs and 100 RBI with the Cincinnati Reds in 2021, Castellanos dipped to 13 homers and 62 RBI for the Phillies last season.

He never looked comfortable at the plate the entire season.

The Phillies signed Castellanos to a five-year, $100 million deal and certainly need more production in ’23. If he can produce like he did for the Reds, it will ease the pressure with the absence of Harper.
