The Texas Rangers hope to join the overwhelming majority of teams that enjoyed a 2-0 lead in a best-of-five and won the series.

Never before have the Texas Rangers opened a postseason like in 2023. The four-game winning streak that has the club on the brink of the American League Championship Series is the longest to open the playoffs in franchise history.

Only once have the Rangers won five postseason games in a row – that came in 2011 in their run to the World Series. A fifth straight victory would advance this Texas squad the ALCS.

The Rangers are just the second team in MLB history to win four straight road games to open a postseason, according to Elias Sports Bureau. The first team to do it was the 2020 Houston Astros. The Arizona Diamondbacks matched that feat with their win Monday at the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Rangers actually have three chances to vanquish the Baltimore Orioles, starting Tuesday night in Game 3 at Globe Life Field. Texas leads the best-of-five series 2-0, which puts the team in prime position.

Some addition notes, courtesy of Elias:

  • In best-of-five or longer series, teams taking a 2-0 series lead are 154-25 (.860).
  • In strictly best-of-five series, the series record when taking a 2-0 lead is 78-10 (.886).
  • Teams that have gone up 2-0 on the road in any series best-of-five or longer have won in 53 of 60 all-time instances (.883).
  • Teams that have gone up 2-0 on the road in only best-of-five series are 29-3 (.906) all-time. The three teams that lost are: Oakland Athletics to New York Yankees (2001), Cincinnati Reds to San Francisco Giants (2012 NLDS) and Rangers to Toronto Blue Jays (2015 ALDS).

There are a couple of historical notes that don’t bode well for Texas. The Rangers are 3-8 all-time in Game 3 of postseason series, losing four in row and going just 1-6 at home. Texas is 5-10 in clinching games, snapping a six-game losing streak by beating the Tampa Bay Rays in the Wild Card round.

The only two home-clinching wins sent the Rangers to the World Series in 2010 and 2011.
