Injured Texas Rangers First Baseman Completes First Rehab Game

Nathaniel Lowe scored a run in his first game action since suffering an oblique injury during spring training in March.

Injured Texas Rangers first baseman Nathaniel Lowe played the first game of his rehab assignment with the Frisco RoughRiders on Friday night.

Next up? A matchup with Houston pitcher Justin Verlander.

The Houston Astros announced on Friday that Verlander, who is on the 15-day injured list with a shoulder injury, would make his second rehab start with the Corpus Christi Hooks in Frisco on Saturday.

That will give Lowe a chance to test himself against one of the best pitchers in baseball.

Lowe finished 0-for-4 with a run scored in his first game action since spring training.

Batting third and starting at designated hitter, he grounded out in his first at-bat. In his second at-bat, he reached on a fielding error, which scored Aaron Zavala to give the RoughRiders a 1-0 lead. Frisco ended up scoring five runs in the frame.

Lowe later scored on a Cody Freeman two RBI single.

Lowe grounded out and popped out later in the game. The RoughRiders won, 7-1.

Lowe suffered a right oblique injury while swinging during spring training in early March. His recovery has been similar to center fielder Leody Taveras, who suffered a similar injury early in spring training last season and didn’t return until the second week of the season.

Lowe has been building up to the rehab stint, as he took batting practice with the Rangers during their last home series at Globe Life Field with Oakland, which ended on Thursday.

The Rangers are now on a three-city, 10-game road trip that started on Friday at Houston.

Lowe started 161 games at first base for the Rangers last season, as he batted .262 with 17 home runs and 82 RBI. He set a career high in at-bats (623) and won his first Gold Globe as he and the Rangers won their first World Series, beating the Arizona Diamondbacks in five games.
