Mets Reportedly Targeting Ex-Red Sox Pitcher In Free Agency After Stellar Season

It sounds like the Mets are interested in landing a former member of the Red Sox

One former member of the Boston Red Sox could end up finding himself playing in New York in 2024.

Former Red Sox and Detroit Tigers hurler Eduardo Rodríguez is a free agent and is expected to have a strong market. There even have been rumblings that the Red Sox could be interested in a reunion. Another team that reportedly has shown interest in Rodríguez is the New York Mets, according to Metsmerized Online's Mike Mayer.

"Sources: The Mets have shown interest in left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodríguez," Mayer said. "The 30-year-old had a career-best 3.30 ERA during the 2023 season."

It's not surprising that Rodríguez is expected to have a big market. He is coming off arguably the best season of his career after logging a 3.30 ERA across 26 starts for the Tigers. Rodríguez began his big league career with Boston and spent the first seasons of his career in town. The big lefty was solid and helped lead the club to the 2018 World Series and followed it up by finishing sixth in the American League Cy Young Award voting in 2019.

Rodríguez left the Red Sox in free agency ahead of the 2022 season after signing with the Tigers. He was solid in 2022, but dealt with injuries and only was able to make 17 starts. Rodríguez was more healthy in 2023 and shined for Detroit. He was floated as a trade candidate multiple times but declined a trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead of the trade deadline.

The 30-year-old now is expected to land a large contract and has the opportunity to choose his next club in free agency and it sounds like the Mets could end up being an option.
