Red Sox Seen As 'Potential Fit' To Land Ex-Yankees, Padres Slugger

Boston could use an upgrade and more pop in the lineup

Could the Boston Red Sox land a former New York Yankees All-Star this offseason?

The Red Sox's starting rotation has led to the most headlines, but Boston has other areas of need across the roster. One position that could use an upgrade is catcher.

Boston has been linked to a few backstops, but currently still have Connor Wong and Reese McGuire on the roster and it's unclear if it will bring in someone else.

While this is the case, Boston has been listed as one of the "potential fits" for former Yankees, Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, and San Diego Padres slugger Gary Sánchez, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

"Sánchez failed to catch on with either the (San Francisco Giants) or (New York Mets) early in 2023, but the one-time phenom was rejuvenated after landing with the Padres in late May," Feinsand said. "He posted a .792 OPS with 19 home runs in 260 plate appearances, showing the power he displayed with the Yankees early in his career.

"Sánchez’s biggest impact may have come behind the plate, where he emerged as the personal catcher for Blake Snell, who posted a 1.29 ERA in their 18 games together. Perhaps Sánchez is waiting for Snell to sign, hoping for a reunion with his batterymate. Potential fits: (Los Angeles Angeles), Red Sox."

Sánchez would be a solid upgrade for the Red Sox, but a move may not make sense. He likely will cost more than Wong or McGuire and could shut down the path for elite prospect Kyle Teel to make the jump to the big leagues.

If the Red Sox are going to add more in free agency, they should address the starting rotation before anything else. It would be nice to have someone like Sánchez on the roster, but a move seems unlikely.
