Who will Carlos Correa take the field with for in 2023?

At one point it seemed certain he would be playing for the San Francisco Giants but that didn't work out. It then seemed like Correa was poised to play with the New York Mets but that may not happen now as the two sides hit a snag in their negotiations due to the shortstop's physical oping the door for other teams to join the sweepstakes -- like the Boston Red Sox.

Correa initially agreed to a 13-year, $350 million deal before it fell through due to San Francisco's concerns with the two-time All-Star's physical. The 28-year-old suffered a lower leg injury while in the minor leagues that led to multiple surgeries and now is giving the team concern.

The Mets inked Correa to a 12-year, $315 million deal but it has fallen through as well the two sides have continued negotiating but have been unable to finalize a new contract leading Correa's camp to communicate with other teams, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"There’s been decent hope for two weeks that Correa and the Mets could finalize the agreement, with a few alterations, and Correa’s camp had limited discussions with the Mets until Thursday, Heyman said. "But two weeks into the discussions, the unresolved issues have at least led Correa’s agent, Scott Boras, to check in with other teams."

If the Mets are unable to come to terms with Correa, Boston would be the perfect team to swoop in and nab the shortstop. With the Red Sox's loss of longtime fan-favorite Xander Bogaerts, there's an opening at shortstop for the first time in 10 years.

Correa already has a relationship with Red Sox manager Alex Cora and Boston's latest agreement with third baseman Rafael Devers on a massive contract shows the team is willing to spend big. A short-term deal with a high annual value may be a better fit for Boston as it has top prospect Marcelo Mayer working his way up the minor leagues.

When it's all said and done Correa likely will end up with the Mets, but the longer it takes for the two sides to come to terms the more interesting a paring with the Red Sox becomes. A deal may be a pipe dream, but the Red Sox certainly have the capital to get one done and Correa immediately would put the squad back in contention in the American League.
