Rumored Red Sox Target Reportedly Off Market After Signing Historic Extension

One former Boston Red Sox isn't going anywhere.
At one point during the offseason, it seemed as though the Boston Red Sox were interested in making a big splash with a blockbuster trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates but it doesn't sound like it will be happening anytime soon. Boston was tied to Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds throughout the offseason as trade rumors swirled, but the young star reportedly isn't going anywhere after agreeing to an extension with the club, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
The 28-year-old is in his fifth MLB season and has shown potential to be a star. Reynolds earned an All-Star nod in 2021 and is off to an even better start this season. In 22 games, Reynolds has slashed .294/.319/.553 to go along with five home runs, five doubles, and 18 RBIs.
It seemed likely that Reynolds would be traded at one point, but Pittsburgh opened up its wallet and shelled out the biggest contract in team history while signing the outfielder to a reported eight-year, $106.75 million extension. One thing that slowed up the extension conversations was discussions about a no-trade clause. While he didn't get a full no-trade clause, he reportedly did get a partial six-team no-trade list.
Boston's outfield hasn't been an area of struggle this season with Masataka Yoshida, Alex Verdugo, Adam Duvall, and Jarren Duran all impressing at different points this season. Adding Reynolds would've been nice, but wasn't a necessity for the Red Sox. Boston's biggest struggles have come from the club's starting pitching rather than its offense or more specifically the outfield.
With Reynolds off the market, there certainly will be some more interesting that will be available throughout the season. If the Red Sox were to make a major splash, it likely will be a pitcher closer to the trade deadline.
