White Sox Injury News: A Long-Awaited Kyle Teel Update, Davis Martin Trending Up

The Chicago White Sox are keeping their fingers crossed.

With a little over a month to go until the end of the regular season, the White Sox are on the verge of getting back one of their best young talents. Kyle Teel could be seen running the bases ahead of the team's walk-off win over the New York Mets on Sunday evening. It marked a big step in the right direction for Teel, who has been sidelined since July 21 with an ankle sprain.

The team also shared that Teel is now set for a rehab assignment on Tuesday in Triple-A, per James Fagen of the Chicago Sun-Times. It's unclear how many games the White Sox plan to have Teel play with the Charlotte Knights, but one can safely assume that he will see at least a couple of outings.

Is time of the essence for the White Sox? Of course, but Teel has appeared in only 19 games this season. He first missed multiple months due to a hamstring strain suffered during the World Baseball Classic with Team Italy in the offseason. He finally made his Year 2 debut on June 22, only to last about four weeks before another injury put him on the IL.

The last thing the White Sox want to do is rush Teel back, especially with the postseason on the horizon. Teel's bat could be a real difference-maker down the stretch, particularly when considering what the White Sox have gotten from their other catching options.

Chicago was initially leaning on Drew Romo and Edgar Quero, both of whom were hitting below .200 for much of the year. Quero was later optioned to Triple-A, as the White Sox proceeded to trade for Joey Bart at the trade deadline. Alas, Bart would find himself on the IL shortly after, eventually leading to the White Sox grabbing Jake Rogers off waivers.

For what it's worth, Rogers is a strong defensive option to have in the backstop. The pop he can offer at the plate has also been on display, as he has one walk-off home run as a member of the team already. Nevertheless, it's hard to imagine the White Sox feeling comfortable heading into the playoffs with either Rogers or Romo as their top option in a must-win game. They want Teel behind the plate.

To be sure, Teel's 19 games left plenty to be desired. He only hit .190 and struck out 27 times. But the upside was made clear during his rookie campaign. Teel slashed .273 with eight homers and 35 RBIs in 78 career games. He was one of the most hyped-up White Sox players coming into the year, especially after adding some extra muscle to up his power.

Davis Martin Also Trending Up for White Sox

According to Bruce Levine of 104.3 The Score, Davis Martin is also nearing a rehab stint. The starting arm threw 35 pitches this weekend and is expected to do another side session before he is sent to join Charlotte. Martin is currently on the IL with a blister issue.

It's been a tale of two seasons for Martin. The beginning was All-Star worthy, as he held a 1.61 ERA over his first nine starts. Fast forward to his last 15 outings, and Martin is carrying a 6.52 ERA. In his last outing, Martin was ejected for having such bad control that he threw two balls near the head of Reds slugger Sal Stewart.

There is clearly a version of Davis Martin that can be very good and force a fair share of swings and misses. The White Sox can only hope that this time off has allowed him to tap back into what was working early on this season. If he returns and the struggles continue, Will Venable is going to seriously have to consider whether he deserves a spot in the postseason rotation.
