Yankees Monday Mailbag 8/24: Front Office Changes, George Lombard Leading Off, Moving Off Anthony Volpe

José Caballero's future with the club and George Lombard's offense are just some of the questions that we headline in this week's mailbag.

The New York Yankees are within striking distance of first place in the American League East -- three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays. Right now, the organization's plan is to figure out how their postseason roster will shake out, all while trying to win the division.

There are plenty of questions from fans about what the roster should look like in the final weeks. George Lombard Jr. hit fifth on Sunday. That was a good spot for him. They probably won't outright put him in the leadoff spot until Trent Grisham really craters from here on out, though.

Grisham, despite all his struggles, is one of the best at getting on base on this team. Since the Atlanta Braves series, which accounts for his most recent 64 plate appearances, Grisham is slashing .281/.359/.667 with six homers and 13 RBI. He has a 10% walk rate over this span, and that probably goes up when Aaron Judge is back in the lineup.

They probably shouldn't play around by moving him off that spot, but Lombard does deserve to move up. He should be in a place to help drive in runs.

When is it time to cut the cord on Anthony Volpe?

Is it time to get rid of Anthony Volpe?

Volpe is hitting pretty well in the minors. That doesn't mean it will translate into big-league success. The best thing that the Yankees can do at this point is keep him there and see if they can deal him in the winter.

Of course, the Ryan McMahon injury changes things a bit. Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been hitting better. Let's say he falls off again or they don't want him hitting against lefties in the postseason. There's a chance for Volpe to play second this year, and Caballero at third. Even with that, they should probably still trade Volpe in the winter.

Josè Caballero is best suited to play second base a bit for now. It's just hard to trust that Chisholm, who has been playing better, will keep it up. This can change week to week. If Chisholm struggles, Caballero will get more playing time. If he goes on a little bit of a hot streak, he might get less playing time. It all depends on everything happening around him.

The end of an era

Brian Cashman's best replacement?

Realistically, Brian Cashman will go out on his own terms. He won't ever get fired, and Hal Steinbrenner is probably happy that he keeps them in a position to win. A change of the guard could put that in jeopardy, and then that might get in the way of all those seats being filled.

It shouldn't surprise anybody if Cashman ends up helping the Yankees find his replacement. It could come in-house. Andrew Friedman or Theo Epstein probably isn't walking through the door, even if they are somehow available.
