Facing more than three batters in just one inning, Kason Gabbard pitched Boston's second complete game shutout of the season and beat the Royals 4-0 on July 16 at Fenway Park. Gabbard allowed just three hits with eight strikeouts for the Red Sox, and then won his next start July 21 against the White Sox, allowing just one run over seven innings.

Lowe had eight earned runs in three innings, including six in the first, while Glavine failed to win his 299th game by allowing six runs before being pulled with no one out in the third.
